Medz Yeghern: the Great Evil, as Armenians call the extermination suffered at the hands of the Turks in the last century, in which hundreds of thousands of people brutally lost their lives, so much so that it has been recognised by historians as the first great genocide of the 20th century.
On the night between 23 and 24 April 1915, the Young Turks, on the orders of the ‘Three Pashas’ Mehmed Talat, Ismail Enver and Ahmed Djemal, carried out a series of sudden round-ups in Istanbul, then capital of the Ottoman Empire, against the intellectuals belonging to the Armenian community, who were later deported to Anatolia and exterminated. This was the first act of the massacre of the Armenians, which went on silently for several years, while in Europe the great powers were busy fighting the First World War.
